The Sunset shot revamp!

I wanted the final shot of our film to memorable so I decided to revisit the original sunset moodboard that I painted and add further detail to the piece.

War Flash Backs!!!

Ben Brown the director of our group wanted to incorporate footage of a film in our film so that it had some world war action scenes to act as a catalyst for the Soliders journey into insanity. I used a couple of examples then cut them together in after effects with shots from our old animatic.(The animation was completed by Neil Marriott)

The film coming to life

I compiled a quick rough cut with all the recent renders to see if all the shots flowed smoothly which it did not, having straight cuts seemed to be slightly fast and lost the pacing which we originally intended to have. I added fades after each shot to ease the pasing and now flows at a steady pace.

Seagull Animation

Finally I get some animating to do, this animtion was a big collaborative effort by Cathal Mellackh, Louise Duncan and myself and we are very proud of it. One of the main problems that we encountered during the rigging process was how to make the wings flap out. Cathal later figured out to morph them out of the Seagulls body which works very well as the motion is too quick to see, although there is texture stretch when the wings are dormant.

Low poly modelleing and Texturing

During the final year of study at Ravensbourne I wanted to increase my modelling knowledge so that I can later develop this skill further on other projects. I worked on various films and asked to model low polygon obelcts and props. Eventhough the models are very low poly and are primitive compared to other cg work, I decided to model from a texturing point of view concentrating on clean geometry.

Here is part two of the lightning shot sequence, as again it is not finished as it needs the post production cg elements. One element that I need to point out is the boat in the background is meant to disappear as it is suppossedto represent the Soldier becoming insane as he imagines this occurance.

I've been working on this for quite a while using painted photoshop images and animating them in after effects it took quite a while to mimic a lightning flash but the final result is very pleasing!

ps, the struts and ocean are plave holders and will be replaced with wonderful finished cg renders.

Prop Textures

Here is my textured Red Oxide painting on a low poly cube, I also added details of corrigated card to finish it off. After the completion of this I moved onto texturing a simple train texture for Joseph's bed room, I originally had vivid colorful colours but opted for a less extravagant design approach. (The texturing, modelling, lighting and rendering for the bed room shots were completed by Ritchie Hoyle, only the train and box art textures were created by myself)

The Train Tunnel

Ritchie wanted me to texture a train tunnel for his film, he wanted a simple design with a slight push toward the colour scheme of his film, hence the pink smoke from the cartoon train. I also included a small bump map to enhance the brick texture a bit further.

During the Soldier project I did many tests to see how the Soldier becomes insane, using the idea of the Soldiers mind manipulating his perspective I came up with this test, enjoy!

Joseph's trip to the seaside

As well as working on Jim Bending's film I also began working on Ritchie Hoyle's film about a boy named Joseph who imagines a trip to the seaside with his best friends, two robots named Red Oxide and Knit Wit. My role on the project was to design a secondary character (the sea monster) and complete small texturing duties.

Ritchie wanted the sea monster to emerge put of the water with sea weed and wreckage stuck to it, I used pen and a dry brush to create the slime like effect.

I was also asked by Ritchie to design box art for Fred as he wanted this to be used as a prop in the film, the picture was completed entirely on a wacom tablet from initial sketch to the final finshed piece.

The Monster Kid project

After completing the main bulk of pre-production work on the Soldier project I decided to tackle a much simpiler film. Jim Bending's project is about a child that can manipulate objects in his perspective and gets in to mischeif because of this. My role on this project was as matte painter and texture artist, the examples can be seen below.

My first jobs for Jim were to texture the bench and tree, Jim wante each element to have a soft feel so I was advised to use colour gradients from Photoshop and Maya (The lightning, sfx and modelling was completed by Matt Beale). The tractor was also modelled by Mattand textured by yours truly.

After researching extensivly on WW2 propaganda posters I wanted the interior to have its own distinct take on this element, I was happy with the final result.

The Interior "The Crazy Room" Textures

To uv map and texture the entire enivironment I decided to uv map all the elements of the interior firat then texture each prop in their respective importance in the film. The walls in particular were a big challange as it needed to look grimy as well as slightly realistic. The examples below show a small portion of the props and other elements uv mapped and textured.

During the easter break I carried on working so that the interior was finished and ready to light and render. I made a decision long ago that all the textures that I created would be from scratch as I wanted to learn more about photoshop, furthermore it would have been too simple to download textures and apply them.

Mood board developments

Having previously completed the pre-production colour moodboards I continued to develop these further for the final shots of the film. I initial idea for the lightning shot was to animate the clouds so that the shot feels much more life like, so I decided to alpha the clouds out in Photoshop and animate them in Maya.

After numerous tests I abandoned this idea and used After Effects to animate the clouds and lightning as it offered me more control and options over the desired effect that I wanted to achieve for this shot, the pictures below shows the development of the shot from orginal moodboard to its development thus far.

Here is our secondary character that is only in two shots in the film, I really enjoyed texturing this model as it was very quick to uv map and so I could spend alot more time on the Seagull's wing texture, I was very proud of the final result!

The Soldier in CG!

After completing all the pre-production work I began tackling the Soldier's face textures, due to the facial rig the model itself was extremly high poly and so took quite a long time to uv map, (although now I can do it alot faster) ;)

The textures were hand painted in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet, I throughly enjoyed this process as I can see the model coming to life bit by bit.

I had an idea to show the Soldiers madness visually of using matchstick light and from this seeing images of the photo that he holds dear being manipulated by his mind, twisting his perception of the real world.

The Soldiers photo is one of the main props in our film and so required some attention, I sketched out a design for the couple from a reference picture that I came across as I really liked
the composition. I then modified the females face to signify the Soldiers slow deterioration into madness as his mind begins to play tricks on him, the development of this can be seen below.

The Interior

I began designing the interior of the fort with the Soldier in mind, I wanted the environment to be enclosed, small, tight and dirty so that all the action is focused on the Soldier himself. The main problem that I found was deciding the other elements and props to include in the scene, but luckily the research trip that I carried out proved useful for prop information.

Most group members working on this project took on the task of designing the look of the main character of our film. Due to the nature of this film it was made very clear that the design must not resemble a life like person due to the limitations of our skills in modelling a realistic looking person in cg.

I decided to design the character with exaggerated facial features so that the viewer can understand that the Soldier has aged due to the time that he has spent on the fort, I used Cristian Bale character from the Machinist as well as Mackenzie Crook from the office for their thin facial structure.

After the inspirational research trip I continued with the designing process working on rough storyboards and then on to wideshot moodboards. The moodboards were completed in order to convey the various colour schemes that the director wanted to portray in the films, for example lightning shot (depressive, turbulent seas), the sunset shot (peaceful, calm waters).

Research Trip

I took this project on due to the films dark and gritty nature, so I decided to learn more about WW2 and took a research trip to the Imperial War Museum (IWM). This was a very educational trip as it gave me further ideas of how to tackle the designing process as well as collating textures and prop references.

At the IWM I began drawing out a sketch of a soldier (not knowing until further research that I was drawing a German soldier) so that I could later paint a quick moodboard for the director,
